7. Old Yeller (1957)

Lady And The Tramp
Disney

Old Yeller is an American classic. With terrific performances, poignancy and a great sense of adventure, this is one which takes the titular character of a dog and shows the influence and impact it can have on a person’s life.

Shortly after the end of the American civil war, the Coates family settle into a little community, located in Texas, where a stray dog stumbles upon their ranch. Although young Travis Coates dismisses the animal’s unsolicited visit, the rest of the family want to take him in and give him a home. Although he is reluctant at first, the relationship between Travis and “Yeller” grows stronger as he continues to have a great effect on the boy’s life.

The most memorable and well known scene of all is the pivotal ending in which Old Yeller is put down by the boy who loved him most. It’s a dark and gloomy ending, especially for a family film, but it’s realistic and even the audience knows it’s for the best.
