10 Best Ever Live Action Movie Duologies
5. Letters From Iwo Jima & Flags Of Our Fathers
Two companion films that tell either side of the battle of Iwo Jima. That bit of stunt storytelling would itself earn its place among duologies. But the two movies work pretty well as companion films. The Letters of Iwo Jima might be the better of the two and received more acclaim upon release. But Flags of our Fathers does have its merits.
Telling the story behind one of the most famous pictures of World War Two and its effects on the people involved in the said picture. It is very effective in showing how people react to their fame which might not be deserved. That makes it more relevant for today's times.
If fame is what drives Flags of our Father, honor and the desperate need of hold on to it is what drives Letters from Iwo Jima. Lead ably by Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Inception), the desperation while fighting a losing battle is well depicted here. While it does feel like a slow burn in trademark Clint Eastwood fashion, both movies manage to go hand-in-hand to tell the larger story - one that manages the put a human face to the people on the other side of the battle.
