6. Election & Election II: Triad Election

Often compared to and called the Hong Kong version of Godfather I and II. It has been highly influential in the depiction of the Triads since its release. The movies depict the election of the leader of the Hong Kong Triad and the resulting aftermath.

Driven by the fact that the election term is two years and the previous leader cannot be re-elected, it portrays people on either side of the fence. It doesn't have the epic sweep usually associated with crime sagas and is a marked departure from the heroic bloodshed or the cartoonish villains usually depicted in Triad movies.

Headed by Simon Yam who is perfect as the tragic heroic figure of the first movie who turns diabolical in the sequel. Paranoid and drunk with power, he wants to break tradition and retain his seat he fought so hard to win in the first movie. Loius Ko is also incredible as the Michael Corleonesque character forced to get his hands dirty in the elections for his family's sake.

Watch out for the scene where he decides he had enough of torturing a guy he kidnapped for information and proceeds to butcher him to set an example. The look of awe on the faces of the torturers who until then saw him as a decent family man says it all. It is a very disturbing scene and you know he has gone to the dark side forever.

That is a very important aspect of the two movies - to see how the good guys/anti-heroes go bad and give in to greed and hunger for power. As the adage goes, the fight is not between good and bad, but between two evils. And that is the perfect way to describe these two movies.
