10 Best Examples Of Movies With A ‘Chekhov’s Gun’

9. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery – Toothpaste, Floss, Penis Pump

Bruce Willis Fifth Element
New Line Cinema

Austin’s return after being frozen for thirty years comes with lots of jokes about his reactions to the new time period and how it differs from the way he is used to living. Vanessa, clearly shocked by the state of his teeth, tries to introduce him to an array of dental products, which he assumes are garotte wire, plastic explosive and a detonation device. She quickly dismisses this, telling him that there have been many advancements in the field while he has been away, further leading the viewer to believe that this is just a throwaway gag.

Another hilarious revelation comes when Austin is given his personal belongings that have been kept in storage. These are read out to him one by one and include a Swedish penis pump, which he denies is his, but sneakily puts into his bag when he thinks no one is looking. All these items come into play later in the film, when Austin and Vanessa are captured by Dr Evil and use the toothpaste to blind the guard before swinging to safety using the floss.

We have to wait until their wedding at the very end to appreciate the penis pump, when Austin uses it to disable henchman Random Task as he attacks them in their honeymoon suite!
