5. Zombie Flesh Eaters

Lucio Fulci's movie may be a rip-off of Dawn Of The Dead, but it has enough verve and style to stand on its own, and holds up better than the likes of Burial Ground (1980) and Zombie Holocaust (1981).

For an exploitation film made quickly and cheaply, it’s astonishingly well-shot (by Sergio Salvati), with astute use of its New York and Caribbean locations. Giannetto De Rossi’s make-up effects are similarly top notch, and Fabio Frizzi and Giorgio Tucci contribute one of the most memorable scores of any Fulci movie.

A film that just wants to give you a good time, Zombie Flesh Eaters is the perfect Drive-In movie. It's a no-think horror picture loaded with gore, sleaze and, most importantly, fun. Fulci knows what an exploitation audience wants and serves it up in a double portion. Anyone who wants more of the same (and you will) should check out the director's later zombie films, City Of The Living Dead (1980) and The Beyond (1981).
