10 Best Fan Theories For 2017's Biggest Movies

6. Life – It’s A Prequel To The Forthcoming Venom Movie

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the screenwriters behind Daniel Espinosa’s brilliant new sci-fi Life, have already said its ending was deliberately left ambiguous to leave the movie wide open for a sequel but what if it’s actually a prequel? And a prequel to Sony-Marvel’s forthcoming Venom movie no less?

The seeds of this theory were sewn when eagle-eyed Redditor toomuchsoull realised that footage from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man – the very film that marked Venom’s big screen debut – was used in Life’s trailer. Shortly before Life hit cinemas Sony – who, funnily enough, also have a stake in Espinosa’s film – announced they’d be releasing a standalone Venom film in 2018.

And then there’s the fact that Reese and Wernick had actually pitched an outline during the early stages of the Venom movie’s development and the similarities between the origin of Life’s alien lifeform Calvin and the Venom symbiote.

On the other hand, the theory poses a slight issue when we consider that Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds plays an astronaut (and a dead one at that) in Life but little details like that are exactly what retcons are for, right?
