9. Augustus Gloop - Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory
Augustus Gloop is most certainly a caricature rather than a character, but to his credit so are all of the kids who adventure into Willy Wonkas magical factory (other than perhaps Charlie himself). Gloop was first played by Michael Bollner in the far superior 1971 version of Roald Dahls fantastical tale. As with so many Dahlian characters, Gloop is only one-dimensional, but he plays that dimension to perfection. Veruca Salt has her gum, Violet Beauregarde has her wealth, Mike Teevee has (ahem) TV, and Gloop has sweets... most preferably chocolate. These obsessions also play a part in each of the childrens eventual downfalls; Augustus comeuppance occurs when he leans into the chocolate river to take a drink, only to be (barely) sucked through a pipe and ejected from the premises. If only he could delay his gratification, that sip mightve turned into a lifetime supply of chocolate. Alas, it wasnt meant to be and so the Oompa Loompas are called to bid Augustus adieu with a particularly mean-spirited tune: What do you get when you guzzle down sweets/eating as much as an elephant eats? Side note: Oompa Loompas are jerks. Choice Quote: I feel very sorry for Wonka. Its going to cost him a fortune in fudge.
