10 Best Film Biopics About Politicians

8. Darkest Hour

Anthony Hopkins Nixon
Focus Features

Just as The Iron Lady dodges the controversies surrounding its subject, Darkest Hour is guilty of the same thing. However, it benefits from the fact that its story is told over the period of just one month. This allows the film to be more focused and avoid the feeling that it is hiding the whole truth.

Gary Oldman dons hours and heaps of makeup to portray the wartime prime minister Winston Churchill, as Hitler's forces continue their march through France. Oldman is completely transformed into the tough and boisterous PM, who has to balance his eccentricities with a growing rebellion against him from within his own party.

Darkest Hour is certainly designed to be a rousing film with a large amount of adoration of Churchill that is clear throughout. Joe Wright makes the halls of Parliament cinematic which gives the film some much needed energy and slickness.

Stephen Dillane, Kristen Scott Thomas and Ben Mendelsohn give strong supporting performances worthy of note as well.
