6. Lincoln

Anthony Hopkins Nixon
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Legendary director Steven Spielberg brings the American Civil War to life on an impressive scale in an epic about Abraham Lincoln. The set pieces and production levels are huge and Spielberg spares no expense in recreating the period of the 1800s.

Daniel Day-Lewis won his third Academy Award for his take on the historic president as he fights his crisis of conscience. Lincoln struggles with the decision to work towards abolishing slavery forever or ending the war early which would save thousands of lives but keep slavery in place.

Day-Lewis is, as always, fantastic to watch in the leading role. He has a quiet methodology about him that contrasts with the members of his cabinet screaming around him. It feels authentic and captivating.

The cast is equally worthy of praise, featuring such names as Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, David Strathairn and John Hawkes within its ensemble. Most notable is Sally Field, who plays Lincoln's fiercely loyal wife Mary Todd Lincoln.
