4. The Duffer Brothers
This particular entry could be two words long: Stranger Things. Even if that were their only claim to fame, it would be enough. But the Duffer brothers were making interesting entertainment before the Netflix phenomenon even began.
They wrote and directed an indie thriller called Hidden, about events after the apocalypse. Starring Alexander Skarsgard and Andrew Riseborough, it was a solid entry in an overstuffed subgenre, but it got the attention of producer M. Night Shyamalan.
Shyamalan saw their talent and potential and hired them to work on his first TV outing, Wayward Pines. Based on a novel, the series was a science-fiction thriller for Fox that found an audience looking for serialized suspense thrills merged with science fiction elements.
From there, the brothers shopped their concept for a 1980s throwback series that embraced the nostalgia of Amblin films and John Carpenter. Every network they pitched it to passed on the project, and the Duffer brothers were losing hope about the project.
Then, they got a meeting with Netflix, and the rest is history...
