10 Best Films About Pandemics

6. The Andromeda Strain (1971)

Contagion Film
Universal Pictures

When an extraterrestrial pathogen begins to wreak havoc on an unprepared earth, there is no way of fighting it until an expert team learns more about the organism.

Based on Michael Crichton's book of the same name, The Andromeda Strain won praise from the 'Infectious Diseases Society of America' for its accuracy in certain depictions within the film. Ranging from its accurate depiction of on site research to the isolation of the organism to stem the spread of it, The Andromeda Strain is an early example of employing factual science in order to strengthen the plot of the film.

The constant twists of the movie accurately (to an extent) portrays the difficulties that immunologists can face when trying to culture an organism in a lab environment to better understand it and the ever shifting nature of the study due to the introduction on new unknown pathogens.
