8. Vengeance (2009)
French crooner Johnny Hallyday stars as former hitman Costello, who travels to Macau when his daughter and her family are attacked by a gang of Triads. And as you've probably guessed from the title he sets out for Vengeance. Costello is adrift in a neon soaked Hong Kong, so he enlists the help of three hitmen who know the area to help out. Johnnie To's thriller shows the directors usual flair for restrained, slow burning tension interspersed with explosive bouts of bloody violence. Also present are his themes of brotherhood and honour amongst thieves. The action setpieces are all visually unique and impactful, with the forest standoff and the landfill gunfight being memorable standouts. And the 65 year old Hallyday, with his weathered face and steely blue eyes, makes for a cool, charismatic lead.
