9. The Others

Daniel Radcliffe Woman In Black
Warner Bros. Pictures

God, I love this one. Nicole Kidman is absolutely at her best, perfectly mixing maternal warmth and an icy chill that runs down the spine of the entire story. It’s a tightly wound mystery that doesn’t let up for even a moment to let you breathe, while also keeping a tense and steady pace. A huge creepy house choked in thick fog, creepy kids, a possible haunting and Christopher Eccleston all come together in a deeply moving story about love, loss and grief.

The film was English spoken yet Spanish made, with Alejandro Amenábar at the helm. Not only did he direct The Others, but he was the producer behind the film and created the score (the latter of which is the same throughout almost all his films).

As for the score itself, it is absolutely perfect for the story. Hugely unnerving and sets the hairs on the back of your neck standing right up, especially with the well-used and well-executed jump scares that litter the film’s runtime.

Now that there are rumours of a remake in the works, it’s time to bring this film back out into the light of day, but absolutely be prepared for it to bring a whole lot of darkness along with it. Surprisingly moving and poignant with an absolutely killer twist, this is one to watch on a cold autumn night for a real treat.
