5. Scary Movie 2 (2001)
Destroyed by critics, but embraced by audiences, Scary Movie 2 is an incredibly juvenile shredding of the horror genre in a haunted house set up. Despite its critical mauling, the film is endlessly quotable ("take my strong hand") and one of only two in the extensive franchise to really hit its mark.
Where the first film’s parodying of Scream felt somewhat awkward in that Scream itself was already a genre satire, Scary Movie 2 takes a more free reign approach, mimicking everything from The Exorcist (with a brilliant cameo from James Woods) to Thirteen Ghosts.
The Wayans brothers play out their shtick to grotesque and at times cringe-worthy effect, ensuring that there is not a dull moment throughout. A lot of jokes miss the mark, but when they hit they’re genuinely funny, something that can’t really be said about the later sequels.
