2. Ghostbusters 2 (1989)
Ghostbusters 2 isn’t better than the original but it is just as enjoyable, even if it does contains plot holes the size of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. (i.e why has everyone forgotten the events of the first film and think the Ghostbusters are crazy again?).
There are tonnes of memorable moments here, from the river of slime to the genuinely terrifying subway exploration scene. This sequel manages to capture what made Ghostbusters so special, with an actual horror genre tone mixed with the camaraderie and wit that unfortunately the recent remake was unable to balance successfully.
Though some themes are under explored, like the Ghostbusters having to do the kids birthday party circuit to stay relevant, Ghostbusters 2 did more to enhance the mythology than it did to destroy it. It’s also a shame we didn’t get a 3rd film to complete a trilogy, as it felt like there was potential for more supernatural adventures for Bill Murray & Co to tackle.
