10 Best Hard Rock Songs Used In Movies
2. Free Bird - Kingsman
There's a certain rhythm that comes with making a great fight scene. Along with having some of the best fight choreography at your disposal, you also need to make sure that you have the ideal soundtrack to make sure the audience cares more about the massive brawl that's happening onscreen. Or in Kingsman's case, just pull from the Southern Rock playbook.
On the surface, Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd is a pretty tame song for its first half, being primarily a ballad sung by Ronnie Van Zandt. Once the guitar solos kick in though, the song turns into one of the greatest barn burners in rock history, with guitar duels happening left and right. While it might not have seemed like the ideal selection at the time, having this song at the center of Harry's brawl in the middle of a Westboro Baptist Church meeting is exactly what was needed to keep the audience engaged.
Though the stakes of the scene are a bit sad given that Valentine's chips are messing with Harry's mind, the coupling of the music and the rapid fire way that this scene is shot puts an almost comedic spin on the whole thing, akin to watching something like blood-soaked slapstick. For as much as this marks a turning point in the film, having Southern rock interpolated for a British agent's brawl is something that was just crazy enough to actually work.
