4. Almost Famous

It's hard not to think of Almost Famous as a love letter to the golden age of rock and roll. Written and directed by Rolling Stone writer Cameron Crowe, the amount of factual accuracy about the trials and tribulations of following a rock band has been carved into the minds of moviegoers for years now. Then again, what's a movie about rock and roll without the kickass music to go with it?

Following the guidelines of Crowe's initial vision, a lot of these songs run the gamut from AM radio hits to some of the more hardened rock and roll of the '70s. Aside from the incorporation of the movie's band Stillwater into the mix, the rest of the record offers a much more mellow side of the rock and roll lifestyle, whether it's the smooth folk rock of Cat Stevens or the crazy complex detours you get with Yes' I've Seen All Good People.

If you're talking about Almost Famous though, the real magic comes from Elton John, who's 6 minute epic Tiny Dancer is pivotal to bringing the band back together after a tumultuous time on tour. As far as hard rock goes, it certainly gets a lot heavier than this, but sometimes you have to take in the softer side to appreciate the heavier side of the spectrum.
