10 Best High School Horror Movies

5. Ginger Snaps

This Canadian cult favourite employs lycanthropy as a remarkably effective metaphor for puberty. Focusing on sisters Brigitte (Emily Perkins) and Ginger Fitzgerald (Katharine Isabelle), two macabre social outcasts, the film goes from sullen teen drama to werewolf extravaganza when Ginger gets bitten by a strange woodland monster. As is expected when one is bitten by a supernatural beast, Ginger begins to exhibit drastic changes in both mind and body.

With a strong cast, razor sharp satire and a thoughtful take on the werewolf mythos, Ginger Snaps is easily the greatest teen lycan film of all time (sorry Michael J. Fox), Along with providing nice helpings of gore and suspense, writers Karen Walton and John Fawcett infuse the film with a fittingly dark sense of humour.

Despite the rather low budget, the film's effects hold up respectably due to a reliance on the practical over the computer generated. Suffering for her art, Isabelle spent seven hours in the make-up chair for the werewolf prosthetics and an additional two having them removed. Given the film’s enduring legacy, it was definitely worth the effort.

John Cunningham hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
