The Hitcher stars the immensely intense Rutger Hauer as Ryder, a crazed hitchhiker with homicidal impulses. Ryder randomly targets Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell), an entirely innocent man caught up in this hitchhiker's twisted exploits.

Mercilessly stalked by Ryder, Jim ardently attempts to attract the attention of the police, but is consistently hunted down by his rival as this deranged hitcher murders multiple people (including police officers and an entire young family) on his journey to kill Halsey.

Reaching the end of their perilous interactions, the hitchhiker begins to taunt Jim: Ryder is ostensibly attempting to goad Jim into hitting him with his car.

Jim does run the hitchhiker over which, we discover, has merely injured Ryder. Ultimately, Jim is then able to kill the heinous murderer, shooting Ryder multiple times with a shotgun.

Surviving this film is no easy feat as Ryder will (and does!) violently kill anyone he encounters. Regardless, Jim does not give up, even when police suspect he is actually the killer, and he is finally able to find the strength to take down this psychotic hitchhiker once and for all.
