10 Best Horror Movie Crossovers

8. Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus (2009)

King Kong Vs Godzilla
SyFy

This SyFy Channel classic was the first in a series of crossovers featuring the Mega Shark and was surprisingly the most feasible premise of the franchise.

The others included it facing off against a 150-foot long ‘Crocosaurus’, a shark-shaped submarine designed by the Navy called ‘Mecha Shark’ and the giant Russian robot ‘Kolossus’. The next instalment coming in 2021 sees it fight the white whale from Moby Dick!

The film features 80s legend Debbie Gibson, who plays oceanographer Emma MacNeil. Emma is studying the migration patterns of whales aboard a submarine off the coast of California when a military helicopter drops experimental sonar transmitters into the water, causing the whales to start ramming a nearby glacier and breaking it open.

Unluckily, a megalodon shark and a giant octopus, who were frozen many years ago mid-combat, are released and go on the rampage. The Japanese scientist Dr Seiki Shimada (Vic Chou - best known for voicing Goro in the Mortal Kombat X game) is brought in to try and find out what attacked a drilling platform, teaming up with Emma to try to come up with a way to stop the creatures.

Following a very awkward sex scene, they come up with the theory that they could create a pheromone serum to attract both creatures to the same place to destroy each other. After both creatures manage to take out aeroplanes (with the film’s most famous scene of the shark leaping into the sky and eating a jumbo jet in half), they drop the serum and the battle commences.

The film received mostly negative reviews on release, with criticism over its low budget special effects, but has since become a cult hit on MTV.com and You Tube. Debbie Gibson even returned to reprise her roll in the third film, Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark!
