8. Buttonface - Nightbreed

Considering Nightbreed was written and directed by Hellraiser creator, Clive Barker, you'd expect the film to have some haunting visuals. And you'd be right. Throughout the feature, we see monsters who resemble octopuses, porcupines, and a few critters too deformed to describe.

Amazingly, the most distinctive looking character isn't a monster - it's David Cronenberg's character, Philip K. Decker. By day, Decker is a psychotherapist who helps patients in a psychiatric institution. However, Decker is actually Buttonface - a sociopath who slays his victims and convinces his mentally unstable patients that they committed the murders.

His mask is composed of a burlap sack-like cloth, an asymmetrical zipper around his mouth, and buttons in the eyeholes. It's certainly not a practical mask (How is he able to see?) but there's no question it's lack of expression leaves viewers feeling deeply unsettled.

In fact, Buttonface seems to have popularised the sack-mask concept since it's been used many times since. (Sam in Trick R' Treat, Scarecrow in Batman Begins, etc). It may have spawned many imitators but it's safe to say Buttonface wore the burlap mask best.
