6. Michael Myers - Halloween

One of the most famous horror masks in movie history also happens to be the simplest. In Halloween, the serial killer, Michael Myers, wears a featureless white mask. According to the director, John Carpenter, the "idea was to make him almost humorless, faceless—this sort of pale visage that could resemble a human or not".

Because the budget for Halloween was practically non-existent, the producer, Tommy Lee Wallace, got the cheapest mask he could find for the mute serial killer. He used a mask modelled off William Shatner's face, painted it white, and elongated the eyeholes to make it look eerier.

Even though this mask cost a grand total of $2, it has terrified millions of viewers. Its simplicity and lack of expression helps the viewers see Michael as a force of pure evil rather than a generic maniac.

You actually appreciate how haunting the mask is more when you compare it to the ones used in the franchise. In the sequels, the masks were tweaked to look more expressive, dirty, torn, or burnt. But after four decades and at least ten revisions, the original mask still stands out.
