10 Best Horror Movie Musicals To Watch This Halloween 2020
7. The Devil's Carnival (2012)
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman - the same man who produced the aforementioned Repo - The Devil's Carnival is an eerie, vigorous horror musical. Unlike its predecessor, there are serious improvements in the cinematography, music and themes.
Despite its humble fifty-six minute runtime, Bousman really does pack in plenty of content to create a hellish atmosphere found within a carnival that is quite literally hellish.
Darren has a great way of transporting you into a nightmarish world through the use of the visuals. The ensemble all have boldly coloured costuming and make-up, as does the setting, but it is often obscured by dark shadows. Overall, the aesthetic is sometimes difficult to look at, but it's conveyed in the best possible way to enhance the horrific surroundings.
The underscore is also fantastic - resembling the sounds we often hear at the carnival, such as the typical looped jingle that accompanies a carousel ride, only with such a cutting, sinister tuning to advance the isolated scenes of the carnival.
The acting performances and characters could be ameliorated, but the general mood and ambience is a winner and worth experiencing on Halloween.
