10 Best Horror Movie Opening Scenes Of The 2010s

9. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

Evil Dead 2013 Opening
Paramount Pictures

What We Do in the Shadows is the film that put Taika Waititi on the map, drawing international acclaim and putting a new spin on the vampire story, with a house share of kooky, mismatched vamps who find themselves at odds with a modern world.

The mockumentary kicks off with a walkthrough of the vampires' lives, opening on Viago (Waititi), the most well-adjusted and outgoing bloodsucker in their household, narrating and guiding the camera through his home. We meet his "flatmates" - the young rebel of the gang Deacon (Johnny Brugh), the debonair Vladislav (Jemaine Clement), and ancient, Nosferatu-esque Petyr (Ben Fransham) - before getting into a mud-slinging meeting about the dishes having been left dirty in the sink for five years.

As far as opening scenes go, it's got everything and does everything: scares, surprises, supernatural powers, and gag after gag, milking the setup for everything it's worth and sending up the traditional vampire tropes. A fun little segment in its own right, this opening would stand on its own two feet as a piece of sketch comedy, which should come as no surprise, as What We Do in the Shadows was adapted from Waititi and Clement's 2005 comedy-horror short of the same name.
