10 Best Horror Movie Opening Scenes Of The 2020s (So Far)

5. Scream VI

Scream isn't just responsible for revitalising slashers, but also for giving the world one of the most iconic preludes in the genre. Although each entry begins with a subversive prologue, none can match the one that started it all.

Having said that, Scream VI's beginning is incredibly memorable. The legacy sequel opens with Professor Laura Crane waiting for a blind date when she receives a call from that would-be suitor. After he lures her outside into a dark alley, she's murdered by her date, who happens to be the new Ghostface.

This opener would be shocking for a regular slasher, but Scream purists should've seen this reveal coming a mile away.

That's when the film does something extremely unusual. Instead of keeping Ghostface's identity a secret until the end of the movie, the killer abruptly takes his mask off then and there, revealing himself to be Jason Carvey. At this point, first-time watchers should be scratching their head, trying to figure out what direction Scream VI is taking. Is the story going to play out from Ghostface's point-of-view for a change? Is it going to bother with a twist at all?

While viewers are still wrapping their noodle around this development, Jason is stabbed to death by another Ghostface, indicating separate murderers have become Ghostface simultaneously, oblivious of each other's existence.

Honestly, didn't see that coming.
