3. Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise Opening
Warner Bros.

The most recent Evil Dead entry wastes no time getting to the really gruesome stuff.

Evil Dead Rise opens with an ominous tracking shot in a forest, reminiscent of when the demonic force was hunting for victims in the original film. This unseen entity reaches a lakeside cabin, where it looks like it's about to attack a young woman, Teresa. But in the next shot, this "force" is revealed to be a drone, owned by Teresa's friend, Caleb.

This fake-out works well, since it should make the viewers let their guard down, which is why it's unexpected when Teresa's sister, Jessica, is revealed to be possessed almost immediately after. Though Jessica can barely move at first, she suddenly sits bolt upright and starts speaking in an increasingly demonic voice. While Teresa attempts to calm her, Jessica rips off her scalp, exposing her bloodied skull.

After Teresa runs out to Caleb for help, her possessed sister follows her before falling into the lake. As the devilish entity completely consumes her, Jessica levitates above the water, creating a strikingly haunting visual.

As Jessica's sister and boyfriend look on in terror, the words "EVIL DEAD RISE" fittingly rise up into the sky in bold red letters in one of the coolest title reveals we've seen in a long time.
