A prequel to Richard Donner's 1976 horror classic, The First Omen captures the unsettling tone of the original, being one of this year's biggest horror highlights.

Set in 1971, the plot follows novitiate nun Margaret as she arrives at an orphanage in Italy. After witnessing some disturbing events, she's approached by a concerned priest who warns her that the church is plotting to birth the antichrist.

Complete with a collection of spine-chilling scares, moments of gruesome body horror, and a cinematic presentation that looks like it was taken right out of the 1970s, The First Omen is a devilish delight for genre fans. And while Ralph Ineson's appearance as Father Brennan is another notable highlight of this prequel, it's Nell Tiger Free who steals the show as Margaret. Especially when things get more disturbing towards the final act, Free brings an intensity to her role that makes these moments that much more effective. Even when the horror begins to get a little outlandish, it's the actor's solid acting skills that keep things grounded.

Nobody expected this prequel to be as good as it was, and it was Nell Tiger Free's performance was part of what makes it so good.
