In the 2022 film Barbarian, a woman checks in at an Airbnb where things aren't what they seem. Soon enough, it is revealed that there is something hidden beneath the house which is a creature named The Mother. An elongated, naked, feral woman, she captures people and treats them like her children but if they misbehave, she becomes violent and kills them.

But the creature actually comes from a man named Frank, who had captured women and raped them for years. Their offspring would receive the same treatment from him which eventually led to The Mother.

What makes this character tragic is how it's a victim of a twisted upbringing and years of genetic inbreeding. It genuinely believes it's a mother because of the instructional videos she watches underground. Eventually, her maternal instincts really come out near the end of the film.

When cornered by The Mother on top of a water tower, fellow survivor AJ decides to throw off Tess in order to save his own skin. This leads to the creature jumping off to save her 'daughter,' and then giving AJ his much-needed karma by giving him a brutal death. In the end, The Mother manages to save our protagonist while dispatching the film's final villain.
