For those of you out there who are looking to take your first forays into the world of the horror genre, the majority of the films featured in this article are designed to ease you in gently. And then, well then there's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Tobe Hooper's 1974 picture is a vicious, visceral, violent affair, complete with an audio track that will gnaw away at your brain while you see the antics of the twisted Sawyer family play out.

Those who tried to mimic Hooper's all-time classic often saw past the subtleties of the film, instead opting to amp up the splatter 'n' screams on show. But while The Texas Chain Saw Massacre certainly didn't shy away from serving up some disturbing acts, there was still far more to the movie.

The first in a long-standing franchise full of films of varying quality, that initial movie was shot masterfully, with the sun-drenched locations adding a further sense of clammy, claustrophobic dread to what was to come. And to its credit, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre doesn't show quite as many gnarly acts as you'd initially expect.

Instead, this is very much a film that allows the viewer and their own imagination to run wild while the eerie sound of Leatherface's chainsaw fills the air.
