10 Best Horror Movies Of 2018

2. Annihilation

A Quiet Place John Krasinski
Paramount

It's about here that it feels like science-fiction horror has really made a name for itself in 2018, with this being the third technological entry into this list that has more than earned its accolades over the past year. It feels like Annihilation came earlier than March, but this disturbing, beautiful, dark fantasy gem came burrowing up out of the underground and burst onto screens as a limited release in the early months of 2018.

Following a group of scientists as they enter 'The Shimmer', a strange oil-slick like dome that's slowly growing and engulfing the earth. Nothing has been learned about the environmental phenomenon as everyone that goes in doesn't come back out again - and we learn why as the narrative slowly rolls out.

Annihilation's story is one where the rules of nature don't apply, and its mishmashed visuals coincide wonderfully with its pick-n-mix approach to genre work. It's harrowing, at times scary, and has such a weird hallucinogenic quality it'll stick with you long afterwards. Some claim it's boring or pretentious, but Annihilation at its heart is truly just one of those trippy experience movies as much as anything - which isn't to be held against it.
