7. Freaks

Little Monsters
Amazing

If you like your horror with a good dose of science fiction, then you'll love Freaks. Utilising that special brand of claustrophobic scares that come with trapping someone inside a house with the knowledge that the outside world isn't safe, Freaks sees child Chloe locked indoors by her overprotective father, told that the outside world is scary and bad and no place for her yet. Of course, that just makes her want to go out and see it more.

Plagued by an ice cream man who wants to give her a glimpse of the real life, Chloe eventually ends up outside on an adventure, with the film's central mystery slowly unravelling with each step she takes into the wider world. Despite being named after the infamous, controversial movie from 1932, Freaks follows a much different storyline than that of the circus performers, just in case the title had you worried it was a strangely inspired remake. Thank god it's not.
