Nobody needs reminding just how rough a year 2020 has been, and the movie industry has very much mirrored the everyday life of so many of us. Delays, cancellations, restrictions, and an unnerving sense of concern and hesitation have run across the film business, but that's not to say there haven't been some glimmers of hope in the industry - and, in particular, in the horror genre.

The horror genre is something which remains forever popular with film fans, and part of the charm of the genre is in its versatility, its resilience, and its many ever-expanding ways to get a feature made. And in 2020, we've seen some absolutely phenomenal horror efforts served up to add at least a semblance of positivity for horror hounds during this most troubling of years.

There have been splendid supernatural films, there have been stylish slashers, there have been rampaging reinventions of old favourites, and so, so much more for horror in recent months.

When exploring the very best that horror has had to offer in 2020, then, here are 10 movies that anyone with even a passing interest in the genre should be checking out sooner rather than later.

10. La Llorona

Shudder

Not to be confused with 2019's disappointing The Curse of La Llorona, this year's La Llorona has marked itself out as one of 2020's very best horror offerings since landing on Shudder this past August.

Robbed of a global cinema release because, well, because 2020, Jayro Bustamante's movie has still thankfully been able to find a widespread audience thanks to its arrival on the horror heavy streaming service. And for those with a penchant for well-crafted tension and suspense, La Llorona is something that should be added to your viewing schedule as soon as possible.

More a supernatural, slow building tale of justice rather than a jump scare-laced offering that hits its audience over the head with its mission objective, this is a film that is all about crafting a spine-tingling tale that proves that vengeance will always come a-calling.

For those opting to give La Llorona a try, just be sure not to go in expecting something different to what the movie is. This isn't scare after scare and this isn't gore flowing from every scene, but what it is is a classy feature that takes its time to get you to where you need to be.
