10 Best Horror Movies Of 2025 (So Far)
3. The Girl with the Needle
Currently the only horror film on this list to be nominated for an Oscar - though that will likely change next year - The Girl with the Needle is a mesmerising period psychological horror film based on the true story of Danish serial killer Dagmar Overbye.
Vic Carmen Sonne is magnificent as Karoline, a young woman who begins working as a wet nurse for Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm), the founder of a secret adoption agency for struggling mothers that isn't quite what it seems.
This is a stylistically gorgeous monochrome delight that belies how utterly horrific its subject matter is, pulling no punches as it methodically explores the dire reality of Karoline's new place of employment.
There's a consistently oppressive, even Lynchian quality to van Horn's film, which despite its rooting in real events so often feels like a waking nightmare of a movie.
Sonne and Dryholm give outstanding performances in the lead roles, bringing nuance to a story that could've so easily turned exploitative.
