Of course, no best horror movies of the decade list would be complete without the film that has made its way all over WhatCulture's horror section and back again for an overwhelmingly large chunk of that time.

It Follows burst into the world in 2014 and provided all sorts of subversive fun with its sexy storyline, pitting a young woman and her friends against a nameless, faceless, invisible entity intent on killing those that pass on its curse. The only way to both catch, and then pass on said curse is to boink someone else silly, avoiding a horrible death by the virtue of what's essentially an STI. Well, sh*t.

Taking place in some dreamy setting replete with technology from across the ages - in everything from modern cars, to vintage TVs, to impossible clamshell e-readers - director David Robert Mitchell disorients viewers with a place that doesn't feel real. Then, he bombards us with the waking nightmare of a ghostly presence intent on death, making for an eerie, unsettling world full of eerie, unsettling possibilities before we even let the reality of what gory deaths await those that don't get to a whole load of shagging.

It's as symbolic as it is beautifully put together, and evokes a deep-seated, primal terror in the process.
