10 Best Horror Movies That Aren't Supernatural

6. Hush (2016)

With the likes of The Haunting Of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and Oculus to his name, Mike Flannigan has quickly become a major voice in contemporary horror. One of his equally outstanding but lesser-known ventures is 2016’s Hush.

Co-written by and starring Kate Siegel as budding author Maddie, the film sees her fight for her life when a masked killer begins to torment her at her isolated home one night for no apparent reason. Unlike other home invasion films, however, Maddie is mute and deaf, which puts her at a significant disadvantage against her stalker – or so it would seem.

A ruthless game of cat and mouse, Flannigan delivers an unconventional take on the genre to delightful effect. Maddie is smart and capable enough to stay a half step ahead of her would-be killer to ensure viewers are kept on the edge of their seat.

Likewise, Siegal and John Gallagher Jr as the unnamed intruder effortlessly carry the film with their commendable performances. Flannigan’s expert writing, directing, and editing skills are also in full show here, too, as he pulls the rug from under us on more than one occasion.
