Every horror fan loves a bit of farmyard terror. Since the dawn of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre farms have been home to grisly murders, with plenty of movies since reinforcing the ingrained fear behind wide-open barns with nowhere to hide and industrial machinery turning human bodies into finely mashed pulp.

There's something inherently unsettling about places that birth and breed death for animals, with 1922 adding to the stigma by throwing another heap of violence on top as a farmer chooses to murder his wife for financial gain. Worse, he ropes his reluctant son into the act as well. But what they don't bargain on is seemingly supernatural interference in the wake of Arlette's passing.

Another Stephen King novella to get the remake treatment in recent years, 1922 takes all the brooding darkness of King's writing style and transposes it onto the screen, bringing back King adaptation regular Thomas Jane to perform some masterful strokes as the murderous protagonist. Team work makes the dream work, as ever, and 1922 is a great choice for some classic flavours this Halloween.

Titles relating to farmhouse horror: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Conjuring, Children of the Corn.
