Kevin Bacon strikes again, this time appearing with Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland in this divisive 1990 thriller. Directed by Joel Schumacher, there is an abundance of style here that has, perhaps fairly, somewhat overshadowed the content of the film. The movie's central idea, the exploration of what waits on the other side of death, was not an original idea but it was presented in a new and original way. Schumacher had worked with Sutherland before on the wonderful Lost Boys and he was able to get a strong performance from him in this film.

The film is not without flaws as so few are. However, it has a creepy mood that manages to build throughout the course of the film. While it does not hold up to intense scrutiny, while enjoyed on its own merits the film is a success. The cast gel well together and the threat oozes around them.

It seems to be targeted at a younger audience, perhaps an audience that enjoyed the Lost Boys over some of the darker examples of horror cinema, but that is not to say that there isn't a great film here. Watching all of these actors deliver their level best is truly enjoyable. Julia Roberts can make anything she touches turn to gold.

Though there was an attempt to remake and follow up to this film, it is perhaps best viewed as a standalone example of camp horror, perfect for the video rental market on a Friday night.
