10 Best Horror Movies Turning 30 In 2020

6. Bride Of Re-Animator

Arachnophobia Movie
Empire Pictures

Jeffrey Combs is one of the best character actors of the last forty years who doesn't get nearly enough credit for his many, many successful roles. His appearance in the Re-Animator series delivers a sinister and brilliant scientific mind, a modern take on the Frankenstein story. This first sequel takes on Bride of Frankenstein, updating it in a way that only this twisted series can.

Coming off the back of the successful Re-Animator in 1985, this story picks up with the two mad doctors bringing the eponymous Bride to life. It's slick and gory, pushing the boundaries of what audiences could stomach. While the '80s was the decade for truly exploring shock horror and gore, this is part of the welcome team to the '90s attempts to one up it.

This film is fun and camp, while trying to enjoy a neon darkness. In a way, it was trying to bring to horror what Joel Schumacher brought to Gotham, nipples and all. Combs is the true star here, although returning sidekick Bruce Abbott is in flying form as the reluctant but committed assistant.

Brian Yuzna took over the directing reigns from the sadly recently departed Stuart Gordon. Yuzna is a man who clearly has a passion for the macabre and over the top horror style - one only needs to have a look at his filmography to confirm this. Meanwhile, this sequel is an absolute blast of body horror and glee.
