10 Best 'I’m Dead And I Know It’ Moments In Monster Movies

8. Luis - Creature From The Black Lagoon

Lizzy Caplan Cloverfield
Universal Studios

To be fair, if any of us saw the above webbed claw lurking in through our tent door, you'd immediately scream in terror and do all you could to get out of doge. Unfortunately for Luis and Tomas, though, any hopes of an escape were quickly dashed when the titular beast made its presence known in 1954's Creature from the Black Lagoon.

So minimal is their role in this Universal classic, the Luis and Tomas characters - and respective actors Rodd Redwing and Perry Lopez - aren't actually named in the credits of the original cut of the movie. However, these figures play a pivotal part in setting the table for the monstrous threat of the picture, being the first victims of Gillman.

Having set up camp in the Amazon, Luis and Tomas are a couple of assistants in an expedition to try and locate the remains of a strange amphibious humanoid fossil. And for Luis, he's the very first person to spot Gillman, noticing the creature's hand coming in through their tent, resulting in a panicked Luis being immediately killed off-screen before the fishy beast turns its attention to Tomas.

With that, the world of horror was first introduced to one of the genre's most legendary characters.
