Though the name of the film does make it sound more like a vampire movie or some other miscellaneous monster flick, It Comes At Night actually takes place in an apocalyptic world in which a disease has wiped out huge portions of the population.

There’s a lot of paranoia around strangers and potential infection, so it was pretty much a doomed venture from the start when two families decided to merge together under one roof. The family who first occupied the house (Paul, Sarah and son Travis) have always been suspicious of the newcomers (Will, Kim and son Andrew), and at the end up causing all their deaths.

Painfully though it was all in vain, as kicking out Will’s family and killing them all didn’t stop the virus from infecting their own son, Travis, and eventually themselves. Right at the end, after the death of their son Paul and Sarah sit at the table together. They are completely alone, having killed the only other survivors they had encountered.

They share a hopeless, defeated look as they realise the virus will soon kill them too and there will be nothing left. Just a bunch of bodies in the woods. It was all for nothing, and it was all their fault.
