We love an emotional, self-sacrificing goodbye. Janet’s tearful end towards the close of 2018’s Patient Zero allows her to have a meaningful death, giving way to some new hope in the world by saving pregnant Gina.

Before the world went to pot, Janet was Morgan’s wife. They both became infected and, whilst Morgan seemed immune, Janet was not. In the time since, Janet has been treated with medicine synthesised from Morgan’s blood, facilitated by virologist Gina.

In Janet’s absence, Morgan and Gina have been getting it on and she gets pregnant. By the time things descend into chaos, Gina’s treatment has evolved enough to make Janet more human and she joins her former husband as he and Gina try to make it to safety.

When it gets to crunch time, Janet recognises that her humanity won’t stick around forever and decides she must sacrifice herself to save her husband and his new girlfriend, if not for their sake then for the baby’s.

She lags behind to seal a heavy door separating the couple from herself and a horde of infected, tearing up and reminding Morgan through a window that she loves him: showing her humanity restored to the largest extent ever. It’s the ultimate selfless act and definitely injects a healthy dose of emotion.
