4. Samantha - Take Shelter

In possibly the most understated ‘I told you so’ moment ever, the end of Take Shelter sees all of protagonist Curtis’ visions realised. Having spent the whole film having his dreams dismissed as paranoid delusions by everyone including his wife (Samantha), it is satisfying in a weird way to see tornadoes approaching from the horizon in the final scene.

As Samantha emerges from the beachhouse they’re meant to be taking a nice, safe holiday in, we see her eyes fixed on the horizon. In the glass doors, the reflection of the landscape is visible as tornadoes and dark skies form over the ocean.

Curtis, with their daughter in his arms, looks from the devastating view back to his wife. He really should’ve started yelling that she should’ve listened to him, but instead he is much more composed than that.

The two of them come to terms with the reality of things as thick, oily raindrops fall. The last line of the film is delivered as Samantha realises her husband was right all along and now they are in the worst possible place, too far away from his safe bunker to make it out of this safely.

“Ok,” she says, and we close out the film with the same certainty that she has come to that, because of the world’s doubt of her husband, her family is now 99% definitely going to be wiped out by the incoming environmental disaster.
