Melancholia is, in spite of its absolutely miserable outcome, well-known for being a beautiful film in terms of both aesthetics and meaning.

What makes this entry interesting is the two very different reactions the two characters have to the revelation that they are going to die. The first part of the film establishes Justine as a chronically depressed character, one whose life seems to be riddled with misfortune, sadness and bad company.

Claire on the other hand seems to have her life more together. After Justine’s marriage falls apart, she tries to care for Justine as the depression takes hold. In the end, however, their roles are reversed.

Knowing that the world is going to end imminently to most would be one of the most terrifying ideas. To Claire it is just that, but Justine accepts it calmly and stoically, comforting Claire’s son Leo and facilitating their coming together for the final moments.

It was inspired by a therapy session undertaken by director Lars Von Trier, where he was told that those with depression often act the most sensibly in terrible situations because they were already prepared for the worst.

The end is haunting, it is the kind that rolls around in your skull for a long time afterward.
