10 Best Indie Movies Of 2016 (So Far)
6. The Lobster
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90%
The ultimate in acquired-taste movies, The Lobster is as bizarre as it is ambitious. The film takes place in a universe in which newly single people have 45 days to find their true love, and if they don't do it within that timescale they are turned into the animal of their choice and released into the woods.
It sounds crazy, and in parts it truly is, though while director Yorgos Lanthimos explicitly forgoes common movie sentiments about the power of love, his message is simple - pressure to settle down in modern society is often worse than the perceived loneliness of being single, and this will strike a chord with viewers patient enough to accept his world for what it is.
Colin Farrell stars as David, a man recently separated from his wife who decides to search for a rebel faction known as The Loners, a group founded on the complete and utter rejection of romance. After joining the group, however, David meets an enigmatic woman (Rachel Weisz) who stirs up unexpected feeling within him and makes him question his new found celibacy.
Lanthimos strikes the perfect balance between social satire and budding romance, creating an undeniably weird yet thoroughly engrossing movie that leaves viewers with a lot to mull over, especially the single members of the audience.
