If there’s one Irish horror you need to see immediately, it’s The Hallow. It’s a creature feature which boasts impressive practical effects, thrilling set-pieces, and sound design guaranteed to get under your skin.

The plot follows couple Adam (Joeseph Mawle) and Clare (Bojana Novakovic) move to a scenic Irish home with their newborn son. Unfortunately for them, their new home is a favoured target for baby-snatching creatures known as The Hallow which dwell in the surrounding woods. Even more unfortunate for the couple, Adam’s job as a conservationist requires him to spend extended periods of time in said woods.

In typical horror fashion, the couple fail to heed the warnings of the locals or recognise the significance of a strange, fungus-like substance Adam finds in the woods. But by this point it’s too late. The couple are besieged by the creatures in a handful of nail-biting sequences embellished with a darkly comic flare.

A further plot development adds an extra layer of intrigue and substance to the mix, which introduces grotesque body horror. While the unpleasant imagery heightens the uneasy atmosphere and dark fantasy tone, the ensuing events provide a bittersweet twist which makes The Hallow much more than a conventional monster movie.
