9. The Cured (2017)

The Hole In The Ground
IFC Film

Set in Dublin sometime after a zombie outbreak, The Cured (the feature debut from writer-director David Freyne) puts a fresh spin on the zombie flick by asking what would happen if a cure was found. The answer is a thoughtful character study that acts as a biting metaphor for prejudice in society.

The plot follows two “cured” infected as they struggle to reintegrate into society. Senan (Sam Keeley) is taken in by his sister-in-law (Elliot Page) but suffers from severe PTSD caused by what he did while infected. Conor (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) is having a tougher time readjusting to a world that’s still picking up the pieces. Angered by his treatment, he forms the Cured Alliance, an underground group that fights for their equal place in society.

The population are scared and wary of the cured, believing they want to cause another outbreak. Freyne carefully stokes this simmering tension until it cannot be contained any longer, at which point all the fear, anxiety, and anger that’s been fuelling this conflict boils over and chaos breaks lose.

Driven by captivating performances form its central cast, The Cured is a painfully human scenario that shows the horror doesn’t stop when the outbreak ends.
