10 Best Jared Leto Performances
3. Requiem For A Dream
Depending on how you look at it, Requiem For A Dream stands as one of the greatest depictions of the various descents into addicition that has ever been committed to screen, or is simply one of the most depressing films ever made.
There are valid reasons to support both theories, with the acting on show being on the list for both. While the entire cast is excellent in this film, Leto's Harry Goldfarb is both endearing and revolting. He is a son who cares deeply for his mother, yet is still able to steal from her to feed his habit.
Leto, well known now for disappearing into his roles, is almost unrecognizable as Goldfarb, broken and fallen as he is. He shows that he both manages to love deeply and fail miserably at being a good person. Based on the novel of the same name by Hubert Selby Jnr, the film is as recogniazable for its main theme music as anything else, as this was used in the trailer for The Two Towers.
It is a grim film. It is unrelenting. It is a stunning, if stark, depiction of these broken humans' lives. Leto is slimy and sexy, lost in his addiction, letting it consume him in the search for another hit, another win, another score.
While the audience may never truly root for Goldfarb, they can't hate him either. He is simply a lost soul and Leto plays him to perfection.
