9. "We're All Gonna Be A Lot Thinner" - Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
The trash compactor scene in A New Hope also pairs life or death stakes with sarcastic and deeply humorous banter. In this case much of the wit again comes from Captain Solo, who unleashes a barrage of funny yet irate lines. After jumping into the chute, Han turns his ire on Princess Leia, exclaiming that the garbage chute "was a really wonderful idea." He then attempts to shoot out the door of the chute, only to have his laser blast ricochet off and nearly kill his companions. Things get worse however when the gang releases that the trash compactor has been switched on, and that they only have a few moments before they are brutally crushed to death. Still, this is actually where one of the funniest lines from this scene is uttered. As Han and Leia desperately try to block the encroaching movement of the walls with a piece of garbage, and as Luke begins to bellow into his comlink for Threepio to shut down the compactor, Han suddenly says, "one thing's for sure, we're all gonna be a lot thinner." The way that Ford says this line, especially when it is juxtaposed with his expression of total terror and desperation, lends the scene an unexpected moment of comedic brilliance.
