The trash compactor scene in A New Hope also pairs life or death stakes with sarcastic and deeply humorous banter. In this case much of the wit again comes from Captain Solo, who unleashes a barrage of funny yet irate lines. After jumping into the chute, Han turns his ire on Princess Leia, exclaiming that the garbage chute "was a really wonderful idea." Things get worse however when the gang releases that the trash compactor has been switched on, and that they only have a few moments before they are brutally crushed to death.
