8. "The Negotiations Were Short" - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
The prequel films have often been characterised as lacking in effective humour, and for the most part this is absolutely true. However, there are small moments that work throughout the three films, and many of these come from Ewan McGregor's droll performance as Obi-Wan Kenobi. One moment from the first prequel, The Phantom Menace, sticks out in this regard. After escaping from the initial Trade Federation ambush in the opening scene, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi hide behind some crates in a hanger bay and discuss strategy. While this scene is mostly defined by meaningless dialogue (which would go on to define the whole trilogy), and head-scratching logic (such as Qui-Gon's decision for them to split up), there is one comedic line that is perfectly delivered. After a stone-faced Qui-Gon has outlined the mechanics of his plan, Obi-Wan pipes up, saying, "You were right about one thing master. The negotiations were short." The way this line is delivered is priceless, and its effect is augmented by McGregor's impish and almost mischievous grin. It may also be a funny moment because of how well it plays off Qui-Gon Jinn's dry, humourless persona.

A devoted fan of all film genres and styles, Adam gets equally giddy over the sensitive, existential musings of Ingmar Bergman, and the brawny brilliance of Arnold Schwartzenegger. He loves fish tacos and misses the work of Heath Ledger and Jack Lemmon on a daily basis.
