Although 2015’s The Lazarus Effect may not be one of the best sci-fi flicks to have hit the screen, it’s nevertheless home to plenty of examples of effective jump scares.

While the notorious dog scare that featured in the trailer is more than a worthy contender for this list, there’s one chilling scare which manages to top it: the scene in which Zoe (Olivia Wilde) is brought back from the dead by her fiancé Frank (Mark Duplass).

Frank and Zoe are part of a team of medical researchers who have succeeded in creating a serum (codenamed “Lazarus”) which they discover has the capability of bringing the dead back to life. However, as they discover with their recently deceased dog, the revived demonstrate strange new behaviours.

In a tragic accident while attempting to replicate the experiment, Zoe is fatally electrocuted. Unwilling to let her die, Frank gives her the serum.

A guard appears and the trespassing group must hide. We hold our breath waiting for the danger to pass. Frank checks if the coast is clear before the camera pans back into the room to reveal Zoe sitting up.

Through subtle misdirection, the reveal is an unexpected shock and a foreboding symbol of what's to come.
